Diagnosis & Assessments

Diagnosing autism is a critical step in providing appropriate support and treatment for children who are struggling with developmental delays or difficulties in social interaction, communication, and behavior. As a parent, it can be challenging to navigate the diagnosis process, which is why it’s essential to work with professionals who are trained in identifying and evaluating autism.

Here are a few key reasons why autism diagnosis is important:

  • Early intervention: An early diagnosis of autism can help parents access resources and support services that can benefit their child’s development, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other interventions. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and improve a child’s quality of life in the long run.
  • Access to specialized services: Once a child has received a diagnosis of autism, they may be eligible for specialized services and support, such as applied behavior analysis therapy or educational programs tailored to their needs. These services can help children with autism reach their full potential and develop the skills they need to succeed in life.
  • Understanding the child’s needs: A diagnosis of autism can help parents and caregivers better understand their child’s unique needs and challenges, as well as provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to support their child’s growth and development.

At Hope Autism, we offer diagnostic services to help parents who are concerned about their child’s development. Our team of experienced professionals can evaluate your child’s behavior, communication, and social skills to determine if they meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis. If your child is diagnosed with autism, we can also provide customized treatment plans and support services to help your child reach their full potential. Occupational Therapy (OT)

    What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children build the everyday skills they need to participate in life—at home, at school, and in the community. OT focuses on things like sensory regulation, fine and gross motor skills, self-care routines (dressing, feeding, toileting), play, feeding skills, and school-related tasks. The goal is simple: to help your child feel more comfortable in their body, more capable in their routines, and more confident in their world.

Our OT Approach at Hope Autism Services

At Hope Autism Services, OT is tailored to each child’s unique sensory, motor, feeding, and emotional profile.
    • We begin by learning about your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily routines, as well as your priorities as a family.
    • Our Occupational Therapists complete a thorough assessment and create an individualized, goal-focused plan that fits your child—not the other way around.
    • We use play-based, sensory-informed, and trauma-informed approaches, always respecting your child’s pace, preferences, and comfort level.
    • OT sessions may take place in our sensory-friendly spaces, using movement, play, and meaningful activities (including feeding when appropriate) to build skills in a fun, engaging way.
    • We work closely with parents, caregivers, and our multidisciplinary team (ABA, SLP, and more) to support consistent strategies across home, school, and therapy.
Our focus is on real-life participation—helping your child do more of the things that matter to them and to your family.

How OT at Hope Can Help Your Child

OT services at Hope Autism Services can help your child:
    • Regulate their senses and emotions Learn strategies to manage sensitivities to noise, textures, movement, or touch—reducing overwhelm and helping your child feel calmer and more in control.
    • Build fine and gross motor skills Improve hand strength, coordination, balance, posture, and motor planning for activities like writing, cutting, climbing, or playing on the playground.
    • Develop self-care and independence Practice dressing, toileting, brushing teeth, washing hands, using utensils, and other daily living skills step-by-step, at a pace that feels manageable.
    • Support feeding and mealtime participation Address challenges such as picky eating, limited food variety, difficulty chewing or managing textures, and mealtime anxiety—using gradual, child-centred strategies to make eating safer, more comfortable, and less stressful for your child and family.
    • Improve school-related skills Work on printing, cutting, organizing materials, staying seated, and following routines so your child can participate more comfortably in the classroom.
    • Increase attention and engagement Support your child in staying focused, transitioning between activities, and participating more fully in play, learning, and family routines.
    • Support positive behaviour through regulation When a child’s sensory, motor, and feeding needs are better supported, challenging behaviours often decrease, and participation in meaningful activities increases.
    • Empower parents and caregivers Learn practical, easy-to-use strategies and environmental modifications you can use in everyday routines and mealtimes—so therapy continues between sessions and your whole family feels more supported.
At Hope Autism Services, our OT team walks alongside you, helping your child build the skills they need to feel safe, capable, and confident in their daily life.

        Autism (ABA) Therapy

        What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach that helps children with autism and other developmental needs learn meaningful, everyday skills. Using careful observation and data, ABA breaks big goals into small, achievable steps like following routines, communicating needs, playing with others, or managing emotions. Over time, these small steps add up to big changes in your child’s confidence and independence.

Our ABA Approach at Hope Autism Services

At Hope Autism Services, ABA is not “one-size-fits-all.” We know every child—and every family—is unique.
        • We start by listening to you and learning about your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily routines.
        • Our team then creates a personalized, data-driven plan that fits your child, your family, and your priorities.
        • We use a trauma-informed, compassionate approach, always protecting your child’s emotional safety, dignity, and sense of choice as much as possible.
        • We collaborate closely with parents and caregivers, so you feel supported, informed, and confident using strategies at home and in the community.
Our goal is not just to change behaviour—it’s to build real skills that improve quality of life for your child and your family.

How ABA at Hope Can Help Your Child

ABA at Hope Autism Services is all about building skills that truly matter in your child’s everyday life—and making things feel easier and more hopeful for your whole family. Through gentle, structured, and supportive teaching, ABA can help your child:
        • Reduce challenging behaviours in a safe, respectful way We work to understand why behaviours are happening, then teach your child more helpful ways to get their needs met—so there are fewer meltdowns, less stress, and more calm moments at home and in the community.
        • Learn practical, everyday skills From following routines, getting ready in the morning, and tidying up, to classroom skills like sitting, listening, and completing tasks, ABA helps break each skill into small, achievable steps.
        • Build stronger communication Whether your child uses words, pictures, signs, or an AAC device, we focus on helping them express their needs, make choices, and share their thoughts—so they feel heard and understood.
        • Grow social and play skills We help children learn how to share, take turns, play with others, and build friendships at their own pace, in ways that feel safe and supported.
        • Improve emotional regulation and coping ABA can support children in recognizing their feelings and learning simple strategies to calm, cope, and feel more in control.
        • Increase independence over time As skills grow, so does confidence. We support your child in building independence in self-care (like dressing, washing hands, eating) and other age-appropriate life skills.
        • Support the whole family We don’t just work with your child—we coach and empower you as a parent or caregiver. You’ll learn practical strategies you can use in everyday moments, so progress continues beyond the therapy room.
At Hope, every goal is chosen with your family, centered on what will make the biggest difference in your child’s daily life and future.
