Psychological services

What are Psychological Services?

Psychological services at Hope Autism Services focus on helping families understand why a child may be struggling by providing thorough assessments and, when appropriate, formal diagnoses. These assessments can look at areas such as autism, ADHD, learning differences, and emotional or behavioural concerns—so you have clearer answers and a stronger foundation for getting the right supports in place.

Our Psychological Services Approach at Hope Autism Services
At Hope, our assessment process is designed to be compassionate, family-centred, and trauma-informed.

  • We start by listening—learning about your child’s history, strengths, challenges, and your concerns as a parent or caregiver.
  • Our psychologists use evidence-based assessment tools (interviews, questionnaires, standardized tests, and observations) to build a full picture of your child’s profile.
  • When a diagnosis is made, we take time to explain it in clear, everyday language and answer your questions.
  • You receive a detailed written report with practical recommendations that can be shared with schools, physicians, and therapy providers to guide next steps.

Right now, our psychological services are focused exclusively on assessments and diagnosis—helping you get clarity and direction for your child’s journey.

How Psychological Assessment at Hope Can Help Your Child and Family

Psychological assessments at Hope Autism Services can:

  • Identify your child’s needs clearly
Assess for autism, ADHD, learning differences, and emotional/behavioural concerns so you understand what is happening beneath the surface.
  • Provide formal diagnosis (when appropriate)
Offer clear diagnostic answers that can open doors to school supports, funding options, and specialized services.
  • Highlight your child’s strengths and challenges
Show not only where your child struggles, but also where they shine—so supports can build on their strengths.
  • Guide school and therapy planning
Give concrete recommendations that teachers, ABA teams, SLPs, OTs, and other providers can use to tailor their support.
  • Help you plan the next steps with confidence
Replace guesswork with a clearer roadmap, so you know which services, strategies, and environments are most likely to help your child thrive.

At Hope Autism Services, psychological assessment is about turning uncertainty into understanding and giving you the information you need to move forward with clarity and hope.

Feeding Challenges in Children with Autism – Highlights from Our Workshop

Hope Autism Services Hosts Successful Feeding Workshop Led by OT Specialist

On Saturday, May 31st, 2025, Hope Autism Services proudly hosted a highly anticipated Feeding Workshop at our Mississauga centre, led by our experienced and compassionate Occupational Therapist, Ms. Dima. The event brought together a wonderful group of parents and caregivers eager to learn strategies to support their children with autism, picky eating habits, and sensory feeding challenges.

Workshops like these are an essential part of our autism therapy programming, providing families with hands-on tools and evidence-based guidance tailored to their child’s unique needs.

Why Feeding Challenges Are Common in Children with Autism

Feeding issues are often seen in children on the autism spectrum. These challenges can include:

  • Limited food variety (picky eating)

  • Food aversions due to texture, color, or temperature

  • Difficulty sitting through meals

  • Sensory sensitivities around smells and sounds

  • Behavioral resistance to trying new foods

Addressing these concerns early on through feeding therapy, a specialized area within occupational therapy for autism, can make a significant impact on a child’s nutritional well-being, independence, and quality of life.

What Parents Learned in the Feeding Workshop

During the two-hour session, Ms. Dima guided families through the following:

Understanding the Why – Exploring the sensory, behavioral, and developmental reasons behind feeding challenges in children with autism

Evidence-Based Tools and Strategies – Sharing practical approaches used in feeding therapy such as:

  • Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach

  • Food chaining to increase variety

  • Visual schedules to support routine

  • Positive reinforcement systems

  • Desensitization techniques for textures and smells

How to Build Positive Mealtime Routines – Tips on reducing stress, encouraging food exploration, and using functional communication tools during meals

Parent Empowerment – Open discussion time for questions, concerns, and personalized advice from the therapist

Breaking Barriers: Triumph Over Discrimination and the Importance of Autism Treatment

In a landmark decision by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), the Doan family recently achieved a significant victory in their complaint against Kismutt Dog Rescue. This verdict not only holds great importance for the Doan family but also sets a precedent in the fight against discrimination and ableism, particularly concerning individuals with autism. Autism Ontario applauds this decision, as it marks a pivotal moment for Ontario’s autistic community, their families, and allies. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the details of this inspiring case, its implications, and the role of Autism Ontario in promoting a more inclusive society.

A Triumph Over Discrimination:

The HRTO found that Kismutt Dog Rescue had engaged in discriminatory practices by refusing to place a dog with the Doan family and declining any accommodations. Moreover, the rescue’s subsequent actions, including social media posts, were determined to have promoted negativity towards autistic individuals, creating an unwelcoming environment for the family. This verdict is not only a win for the Doan family but also a powerful statement against ableism and discrimination.

Setting a Precedent:

Erin Doan, expressing her thoughts on this groundbreaking decision, said, “This decision holds significant importance. It assured me that my concerns were valid, dispelling the notion that I was exaggerating. The HRTO’s verdict not only marked a victory for my son but also for the autism and disability communities. By setting a precedent, it establishes a guide for future similar cases, offering support to members of these communities. Additionally, the ruling plays a crucial role in debunking misinformation surrounding autism.”

Implications and Evolution of Human Rights Law :

The implications of this verdict are substantial. It can serve as a basis for legal precedent and contribute to the evolution of human rights law not only in Ontario but also beyond its borders. In a time when individuals with autism and disabilities are facing increased challenges, this decision holds particular significance in ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all.

The Role of Pets in Autism Treatment:

Many autistic individuals in Ontario find great support and companionship through pet ownership. Pets offer an additional source of stability, comfort, and love in the lives of autistic individuals. It is essential to recognize the therapeutic benefits that pets can bring to individuals with autism, providing emotional support and a sense of connection.

Autism Ontario’s Commitment:

Autism Ontario reaffirms its willingness to collaborate with Kismutt Dog Rescue and extends an offer to provide resources that will enhance the pet ownership experience for everyone involved. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that individuals with autism can continue to benefit from the companionship and therapeutic value that pets bring to their lives.

Conclusion:

The recent HRTO verdict in favor of the Doan family is not just a legal victory but a powerful message against discrimination and ableism. It highlights the importance of creating an inclusive society where individuals with autism are treated with dignity and respect. Moreover, it underscores the therapeutic benefits of pet ownership in autism treatment. Autism Ontario remains dedicated to promoting understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals with autism, as well as advocating for their rights. We encourage you to stay informed about this crucial issue and support initiatives that foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Diagnosis & Assessments

Diagnosing autism is a critical step in providing appropriate support and treatment for children who are struggling with developmental delays or difficulties in social interaction, communication, and behavior. As a parent, it can be challenging to navigate the diagnosis process, which is why it’s essential to work with professionals who are trained in identifying and evaluating autism.

Here are a few key reasons why autism diagnosis is important:

  • Early intervention: An early diagnosis of autism can help parents access resources and support services that can benefit their child’s development, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other interventions. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and improve a child’s quality of life in the long run.
  • Access to specialized services: Once a child has received a diagnosis of autism, they may be eligible for specialized services and support, such as applied behavior analysis therapy or educational programs tailored to their needs. These services can help children with autism reach their full potential and develop the skills they need to succeed in life.
  • Understanding the child’s needs: A diagnosis of autism can help parents and caregivers better understand their child’s unique needs and challenges, as well as provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to support their child’s growth and development.

At Hope Autism, we offer diagnostic services to help parents who are concerned about their child’s development.
